CHROMO-THERAPY - THE HISTORY OF COLOR
HEALING
Color
healing is a practice almost as old as man himself.
The priests on ancient Egypt, Babylonia and China employed color
in their healing practices. The Zuni Indians of New Mexico used a
colored shell in healing ceremonies long before the white man came to
North America. The Shell
was held between the sun and ailing
person so that the ray of the sun would shine through the
delicate colors of the shell and fall upon the patient.
In
the Middle Ages the great cathedrals of Europe had stained glass windows
which were used in healing. When the ill were placed in the light from the windows many
miraculous cures were recorded. The
priests of course credited the Saints portrayed in the glass and not the
colored light reaching the patients.
Color
healing was a popular and lucrative practice in the late nineteenth and
early twentieth century. Many
practitioners made fortunes with their color machines.
Houses were built with a solarium where colored glass panels
could be changed to
receive the full benefit of the sun's rays at different times of
day.
Schools
were founded which offered doctor's degrees in color healing and
practitioners of the art were in abundance.
The claims of these men were fantastic, for they believed color
to be a cure-all for the ills of the world.
The establishment of the American Medical Association and the
Federal Drug Administration soon put a stop to the use of color as a
method of healing. All
claims were repudiated entirely by the A.M.A.
The fact that some cures had been effected was discounted
completely and the practice of using color to cure illness was declared
illegal. Most medical
doctors today do not recognize chromotherapy as a valid treatment for
any sickness of the physical body.
No consideration was given to the spiritual aspects of color.
Through
the intervening years, certain irrefutable facts have emerged.
Visible light and color does have an effect on living organisms.
In Japan, scientific experiments proved that young guinea pigs
subjected to red light grew more rapidly than those subjected to blue
light. Mammary glands
exposed to red light secreted more milk than those exposed to blue.
Plants placed in a red or an orange light grew taller and flowers
had more fragrance than those exposed to blue light. In factories, an appreciable drop in the accident rate has
been noted. Human beings,
when exposed to a red light display a definite rise in blood pressure
with a lowering rate when exposed to a blue light.
Hospitals, schools and even jails are being decorated in colors
appropriate to their needs and functions.
Psychologists
have now accepted the fact that color has a definite effect on man's
personality, and his reaction to it is an indication of his character
traits. Doctors in Europe
use the Luscher color test as an indication of stress factors in their
patient. These tendencies
show up before the physical symptoms appear and in many cases serious
illness can be prevented.
Dr.
P. D. McClure, chief blood specialist at the Hospital for Sick Children
in Toronto, Canada, is using a blue light on babies born with bilirubin
in their blood. The blue
light disintegrates this substance, which, if not treated, will be fatal
to the baby, or cause brain damage and cerebral palsy. The only
treatment prior to this discovery has been a major surgical procedure to
give the infant a complete change of blood.
The
most perfect source of light for healing is natural sunlight, which
contains a balance of all the colors of the spectrum.
Primitive man believed the sun was the center of his world, and
he depended upon it for heat and light.
The first gods were sun gods, powerful deities who controlled
man's destiny. Primitive
man lived outdoors most of his lifetime and received the full benefit of
the sun's healing rays. There
was little sickness or disease until civilization brought mankind closer
together.
In
our harried and busy way of life today few people can enjoy the benefits
of natural sunrays. Often
the cities where people must live receive little sunshine.
It has been proven that in slum areas where there is little or no
sunlight, disease is 30% more prevalent.
Some
individuals are allergic to the sun's rays, and others are easily burned
by them. If we were in
perfect harmony within our physical, mental and spiritual bodies there
would be no need for chromotherapy, but unfortunately, few of us are.
Our mental and emotional outlook becomes clouded and distorted at
times, and physical ills appear. We
do not take proper care of our bodies in matters of rest, exercise, and
diet, and so suffer the consequences.
This is why we need the recuperative effects of color.
The imbalance in our systems may be corrected by the application
of the needed color. This
applies not only to our spiritual ills, but possibly our mental,
emotional, and physical as well.

A RAINBOW OF COLOR
RED
The
Coccygeal or Sacral chakra is located at the base of the spine, and
controls the reproductive organs. Red
is the color that activates this center. It is the basis of all life -
the will to live and reproduce.
It is action and excitement, and the courage to overcome and
solve problems in spite of temporary defeat.
Red is the color which dissolves fear, worry and depression. It has warmth and vitality, and is a stimulant and an
energizer. Red speeds heart
action, raises blood pressure and stimulates the kidneys and adrenal
glands. Blood deficiencies
and anemia are treated with red. Asthmatic
and sinus conditions are relieved by this color, and it controls the
reproductive organs, it is a sexual stimulant and will help to overcome
impotency, frigidity and loss of desire.
Red promotes growth in young animals and plants as well as
humans. Perhaps the most
beneficial use of red is in relieving pain, for in cases of constant
pain, such as arthritis, bursitis and rheumatism, it has been very
effective.
ORANGE
The
Splenic chakra controls the spleen and lungs.
The color is orange. This
is the color of energy, joy, and love of companionship. Orange will
overcome depression and nervousness and add courage and hope.
It will restore loss of appetite and give new vitality.
Orange is used for all lung conditions, such as asthma,
bronchitis, tuberculosis, and for wet coughs due to congestion and
phlegm. Orange helps
to relieve gas, convulsions, spastic colon, and intestinal problems.
It activates the kidneys, spleen and glands. One of the most effective treatments has been the use of an
orange light to relieve severe menstrual cramps. Rickets, soft bones and teeth have been helped by orange, and
it is used to stop hiccups. Cases
of epilepsy respond to orange treatments, as do gall stones and stomach
cramps.
YELLOW
The
Solar Plexus chakra controls the adrenal and the pancreas.
Yellow is the color for this chakra.
Science has discovered that portion a of the same material found
in the brain lies in the solar plexus area.
Yellow is the color of mind - the intellect and intelligence of
man. Often we feel
emotional reaction in the pit of our stomach, and perhaps this is the
explanation. Yellow is the
color for study and learning. It
is brightness, newness, and open-mindedness.
This color inspires creativity and new thought.
Yellow stimulates the heart, liver and gall bladder and is used
for stomach disorders. This
is the color most effective in cases of constipation and intestinal
disorders. It stimulates
the circulatory system. Yellow
and the area it controls almost overlap the areas of orange, so these
colors are generally interchangeable in the region.
In cases of arthritis and neuritis, yellow assists in loosening
calcium deposits. This is
also the color to use for diabetes.
GREEN
The
Cardiac chakra is located in the chest area and controls the heart and
thymus. The color is green,
and this is the balance between the Body (Red), the Mind (Yellow), and
the Spirit (Blue). Green is
the color of sympathy, of understanding, of nature, youth, and
rejuvenation. It is also
the color of abundance and wealth.
Green is a beneficial color regardless of condition, for it
balances the system and produces the calmness and tranquillity of
nature. It builds new
muscle and tissue as well as new life and hope. Green is used for heart condition, tumors and cancers,
neuralgia, headaches, influenza, head colds, boils, ulcers and hay
fever. This color helps to
dissolve blood clots and is used for varicose veins.
Whooping cough, cholera, croup and syphilis respond to green, as
do typhoid fever and malaria. Green
lowers blood pressure and reduces muscular and nervous tension. In
cases of insomnia where depression is a factor, green is more effective
than blue. It is a color to
use for overall physical and mental balance.
BLUE
The
thyroid chakra is located in the throat area, and the color is blue.
This is the religious inspiration we need to lift ourselves above
the physical and mental plane. Blue
is a color of truth and loyalty, devotion and inspiration.
It is an aid to meditation and introspection.
It has a cooling and soothing effect and is used to control
fever, bleeding, and in all types of healing.
It has proven very effective in speeding the recovery time after
surgical operations. Blue
is relaxing and induces sleep. All
diseases of the eyes, ears, nose and throat respond to blue.
It is good for hoarseness, laryngitis, sore throat, goiter,
diphtheria, toothache and teething pains.
Cuts, bruises, burns, and wounds of all types are aided by blue.
Use it for hemorrhage, vomiting, apoplexy, shock, dropsy,
duodenal ulcers and ptomaine poisoning.
It will help to combat germs and infections and calm nervous
irritation. Caution must be
used when depression or melancholia is present, for blue can increase
these feelings if used for a prolonged time.
In such cases, green is usually a good substitute.
INDIGO
The
Pineal chakra is located in the center of the head and controls the
pineal and thalamus glands. This
is often referred to as our "Third Eye", for it is the seat of
intuition, the extra sensory powers such as clairvoyance, telepathy and
healing. It is here that
creativity truly begins and man becomes aware of the tremendous sources
of knowledge and energy available to him.
Indigo has much the same qualities as blue, but seem especially
effective in eye, ear and nose ailments, including loss of proper
function of these organs. It
is used to help control bleeding, and in cases of infectious lung
conditions such as pneumonia. Violent
mental disturbances are calmed by indigo and it is used in cases of
spirit possession where exorcism is indicated.
VIOLET
The
crown chakra, at the top of the head, controls the pituitary gland, and
is the region of pure spirituality.
Its color is violet. When
the crown chakra is fully activated, man will have reached the state of
perfect awareness and his abilities will be unlimited. Violet is the
inspiration for the creation of great art, music, and philosophy. Wagner
used this color extensively in his surroundings when composing his great
music. Violet is the
favorite color of many artists and creative geniuses.
This is the color that controls mental disease. It relieves
over-stimulated nerves and reduces excitement and irritation.
It is antiseptic in action and is used in diarrhea, kidney and
bladder trouble. Violet is used for cerebrospinal meningitis and
epilepsy when there is acute mental disturbance.
In cases of psychosomatic illnesses, violet is recommended, as it
aids in clearing the mental disorders which causes the problems.
This color is helpful in scalp conditions and baldness.
Violet works on the nervous system and should be used with care.
It can also cause feelings of depression and melancholia,
therefore short periods of treatment are suggested.
LEMON
This lighter shade of yellow is suggested as a general tonic.
It loosens may elements and helps to activate the glands.
Lemon will stimulate the brain for clarity of thought and help to
eliminate doubt and confusion in the mind of the patient.
It is used to stimulate the learning ability of mentally retarded
children, and classrooms for these children are being decorated in pale
yellow. Short treatments of
lemon should be beneficial for all chronic illnesses.
TURQUOISE
Turquoise,
which combines the healing power of green and blue, is very effective in
cases of burns, sunburn, fever, infection, skin irritations and
swelling. It relieves
itching and reduces muscular and nervous tension, fatigue and insomnia.
PINK
Pink
is the color of love, affection and willingness to serve others.
It is used for emotional illnesses and maladjustments.
This color will ease the mental and emotional problems which the
subject has been unable to resolve.
It is also a wonderful tonic for everyone, and need not be used
for physical ills alone. Pink
promotes health, vitality, youthfulness and general well being.
It will give new life and vigor to all, contributing happiness
and understanding. If two
people are having emotional difficulties, or are unable to get along
together, place both of their photographs under a pink light, and often
the problems will be resolved.
SILVER
In
1992 with the activation of the 11:11, the vibratory color silver came
down onto this planet for the every first time.
This is called illumination, although some people have been able
to access it in the past it had not clearly entered the third dimension.
If you can visualize snowflakes falling, you can visualize
illumination which if what the color silver represents.
It is one of the most peaceful energies on this planet and can be
accessed by anyone who is ready for the perfection of Divine Timing.
There is no reason for discord in your life if you are accessing
the energy put forth by this color.
